abbeychristine Interview
Say hi to abbeychristine, the master of hilarious finger puppets!
What is your favorite part about working in this medium?
I love that felt is considered a bit of a child-like, simple medium, so it's kind of an unexpected choice for making somewhat intricate little figures like mine. I like the contradictions of that. I also love that I don't have to hem anything, ever.
What is your background?
I studied illustration for a bit in school, but am mostly self-taught as a crafter. I started making finger pupets about six years ago and haven't looked back since! By day I work in customer service at a small factory here in Chicago that makes custom pinback buttons. It's a great job, and lets me be creative and engaged with other folks while I'm at work, and then I can go home and be creative and all by myself when I'm in the studio.

Favorite crafty tool?
I have deep love for a good, sharp pair of fabric scissors.
Favorite fall activity?
Making soup and wearing sweaters.
Did you have any inspiration behind the toys you are submitting for Plush You!?
My work relies on a lot on my love of pop culture, but I try to highlight people who I think are sort of subversive in some way. I've always loved that the Golden Girls was a funny, mainstream show with quite a feminist slant to it-- a whole show about older womens' friendships isn't something you see on tv very often, so I felt like they deserved to be memorialized in felt. Plus, who doesn't love cheesecake? ;)
