Plushroom Soup Interview

Say hello to Plushroom Soup!  She's coming to Seattle again this year so come on by and meet her!

What is your favorite part about working in this medium?

The portability! I can work on at least part of my plushies virtually anywhere. Also, turning the pieces right side out and seeing your character come to life never gets old.

What is your background?
I'm self-taught as an artist. My mom is super crafty and always made everything for us as kids, so I owe a lot of my craftiness to her influence. She taught me basic sewing skills when I was about 9, but I didn't really do anything with them until 2006, when I made my first plushie. Everything since then I've learned through much trial and error! In late 2008 I felt like I really started to find my voice as a plush artist, and that's when I launched Plushroom Soup.

Favorite crafty tool?
Oh man, it's tough to choose just one. I guess I'd say my doll-making needles. I'd be lost without those!

Favorite fall activity?
I adore fall. I love everything about it. Walking through the fallen leaves, bundling up in cozy sweaters, drinking pumpkin chais, eating pumpkin pie, apples, and sweet potatoes, smelling the crisp air, dreaming up wacky Halloween costumes, making zombies and other creepy critters. . . .

Did you have any inspiration behind the toys you are submitting for Plush You!?
I use fairy tales and folk tales as inspiration quite a bit. I especially love putting new twists on fairy tales, and I thought it'd be fun to reinvent some famous female characters as men instead. Like many, I've also been devouring all things Game of Thrones and I always love a good period drama, so I new my fairy tale dudes needed to have fun medieval/Renaissance/Tudor costumes as well. I wasn't actually sure I'd pull it off until I was finished; this was my first foray into clothing separates for my plushies!
