Taryn Graham Interview

Welcome Taryn Graham! She makes amazing puppets!

What is your favorite part about working in this medium?
Working wth my hands.  My background is in video so I'm usually surrounded by technology.  Here, it's just me, a needle and some fur.  I was surprised at how relaxing sewing can actually be.

What is your background?
I graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with an emphasis in video.  I dabbled in sculpture there and it gave me the mind set that we can make whatever we need.  For my final video project I attempted to make a children's show and I needed puppets.  Without even thinking I had another option I set out on making them.  I had to teach myself how to sew and I still haven't learned to used a sewing machine yet.  I think I ended up with around 11 for that one project.  Now, I just kind of make them whenever someone wants one for their kids, but I'd like to get the word out and make them for even more kids, big or small!

Favorite crafty tool?
Ah, the exacto knife has saved me on many occassions.

Favorite fall activity?
Running in the mountains!

Did you have any inspiration behind the toys you are submitting for Plush You!?
I wish.  It'd probably make things easier.  My process is just a matter of wandering the fabric stores until I find a fur that jumps out at me.  Once I find it, I get to sewing.  I don't usually find out what I'm making until I work on the face.  From there, the puppet just kind of comes to life.
